An exotic tropical houseplant originating from South America that adds a fresh and unusual accent to any interior. Its stiff, decorative leaves form a compact rosette, from which a small pineapple fruit can also grow. With proper care, it is a hardy and easy-to-maintain plant suitable for home or office.
Interesting Facts
Pineapples are tropical plants native to South America, mainly Brazil and Paraguay.
While known for its fruit, the pineapple is also a decorative houseplant with beautiful foliage and an interesting rosette shape.
Pineapples grow slowly – from planting to the first fruit usually takes 2–3 years.
After fruiting, the mother plant may gradually die, but it produces offsets (“pups”) that can be replanted to grow new plants.
Light
Requires a very bright location, ideally by a south or west-facing window. Direct sunlight is beneficial, especially in winter. Without enough light, the plant will not grow or flower.
Temperature
Ideal: 20–28 °C. In winter, no lower than 16 °C. Does not tolerate drafts or sudden temperature changes.
Watering
Water moderately – the soil should be lightly moist but not soggy. Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings. In summer, a small amount of water can be added to the center of the leaf rosette. Water less in winter. Use soft, room-temperature water.
Soil
Light, well-draining substrate suitable for bromeliads or cacti. Ensure a drainage layer in the pot.
Fertilization
From spring to autumn – every 2–4 weeks. A universal liquid fertilizer at lower concentration is suitable.
Flowering and Fruit
Usually flowers after 2–3 years. After the fruit ripens, the mother plant gradually dies but produces offsets (“pups”) that can be replanted.
Repotting
Every 1–2 years. The pot does not need to be very large – the root system is shallow.
Toxicity
Pineapple is not dangerous to humans, but can be mildly toxic to pets (cats and dogs) – ingestion may cause mild vomiting or stomach irritation.
